  • The Student Survey will start on 13 April and end on 25 April.
  • All students of ETH Zurich are surveyed (Bachelor’s and Master’s degree students, exchange and visiting students, and Lehrdiplom students).
  • The electronic survey and the analysis of the data are conducted by the independent company Kunz & Huber AG on behalf of ETH Zurich.
  • The online questionnaire takes about 15 minutes to complete.
  • The Student Survey is confidential.

Financial

We recommend that you clarify the financing of your studies at an early date. Here it is important to plan for their entire duration. The financing of studies is primarily the responsibility of the student and his/her family; in certain circumstances scholarships and/or loans are available from public or private bodies to complement this.

As far as the curriculum allows, paid part-time work is also possible during studies. This may be within ETH, e.g. as a Hilfsassistent [Junior Assistant], or outside it. Foreign students are allowed to work up to 15 hours per week during the semester and as much as they like during semester breaks, but must first obtain a work permit. If you have questions regarding the financing of your studies please visit us during our office hours. We will be happy to advise you.

Career Outside Academia

What options do I have when starting out on my career? What are my strengths and what skills can I bring into a company after a doctorate or postdoc? Should I join a major corporation, or would a smaller company be better? What is the right way to showcase my abilities in my CV? In an interview, can I say that I have also applied to another company, so I can’t give an immediate decision?

The more thought you give to questions like these, the more effectively you will make decisions about your professional future and the more successful will be your job application process. We provide you with the information you need, both in person and at special events and seminars, and open up valuable contacts for you, working closely with other organizations offering careers services at ETH.

Many ETH graduates are not aware of how broad the spectrum of fields of activity that could be considered for them actually is.

Exploration is all about getting a good picture of your career options. There are so many different career paths to choose from – more than many ETH graduates realise. Before you apply to a company or an institution, you should have an idea about the sector you want to work in, the companies in the various sectors, and the type of activity you wish to pursue. That means you need to explore “your” job market.

The ways to finding a job then are many. But the most successful strategy is to multiple channels. The addresses and hyperlinks you will find on the following pages are intended only as a first step in your research and are by no means exhaustive.

IT student Services

The IT Services “Informatikdienste” offer all registered ETH students, auditors, and special students the following free basic IT services:

  • ETH user account
  • A mailbox with 1 GB of memory
  • ETH-wide available personal home directory with 5 GB disk space

  • public computer labs equipped with Office, web, programming tools, mathematical software
  • Access to the ETH network and the internet on campus internet via Wi-Fi or cable
  • Virtual Private Network (VPN) for off-campus access to ETH network.

Libraries, Collections, Archives

Students obtain support on all matters relating to the provision of scientific information from the ETH libraries based and from a variety of collections and archives.

Personal Assessment

A careful self-assessment is the first step in the application process. It is your launch pad for exploring career options, for focusing on specific sectors and companies, and for the application itself.

A rigorous self-analysis will help you focus on organizations and career opportunities that match your personality and abilities. It will also enable you to project competence and confidence when you meet prospective employers.

Career Events & Networking

Every semester the Career Center as well as some student organisations offer multiple possibilities to get to know numerous companies on campus or virtually, to get a better idea of career entry opportunities and to extend the own network.

As during a career path a lot of job opportunities result form the network and jobs are often not given via the classical advertisement and application process, the value of networking should not be underestimated.

Many students associate the term “networking” with something unpleasant. However, the following quote shows that it is easier if you do not only network when you need something. If you are primarily interested in other people and their profile and career and also ask yourself how you can help them with your skills, contacts or know-how, networking becomes easier. With the attitude that networking has more to do with giving than with taking, it becomes easier and the rest often comes naturally.

Networking is using your creative talents to help others achieve their goals as you cultivate a network of people strategically positioned to support you in your goals … Expect nothing in return!
